Guiyang after a few months

I've grown to like Guiyang. Its not a remarkably interesting city by Chinese standards - unlike many other cities locals will initially recommend the climate to you, rather than a particular tourist attraction, and, while there are odd bits and pieces of historical and cultural interest about, your more likely to find that stuff by traveling outside of the city to the other, small towns in Guizhou. Some of these, like Kaili are much more picturesque too. What Guiyang does have though is a general business that for me has genuine appeal. In many ways it feels like a mini hong kong - streets busy and shops open at 11pm - but its much cheaper here! Street food at the night markets is not to be missed (if you have a strong stomach) and there are plenty of other places to visit. If you've been here a while, you can always get a taste of home by paying a visit to Guiyang's only genuine American coffee shop, Highlands. In general, Guiyangren are friendly but foreigners really stand out here - far more than in east-coast cities - which is something that some like, some hate and others are indifferent to.
