An Ode to Freak Weather in Beijing

The sudden rainstorms in Beijing last Tues (16th June) cause a flutter of tweets, speculating that the Beijing Weather Modification Bureau aka 北京市人工影响气象办公室 has wreaked havoc and caused irreversible damage.

I never thought we would talk about the weather in Beijing as much as the Londoners are wont to do. But we did.

Bemused, I decide to write an ode to the apocalyptic weather that unexpectedly visited Beijing… Continue

You will like this, I promise...

Here's an amazing performance by Perpetuum Jazzile, a choir performing an original take on Toto's song "Africa." Give it a listen if you can. It's a YouTube link, so my apologies for those who are unable to view it. Perpetuum Jazille is a Slovenian choir. If you're still wearing your socks after you watch and listen to it, then I'm either too old, or your too young. :-)

Here is a link to their Web… Continue

"Return the device or...be destroyed!"

Family Guy fans, I sure hope you caught that.

Well, due to the alarming 7 comments on the last blog, the positive reinforcement has brought me back for yet another random, yet entertaining (hopefully!) entry.

So, the topic for today: belongings.

When you date someone, and time passes and more times is spent w/ each other, on each other and all around just in each other's, well, s***...things become confused, items that once had one owner, now have two, and some… Continue

Damn Kid, All my homeboys is gettin' locked up!

The Shanghai Daily tells us about the city police bringing a punishing case of minority oppression earlier this week in the Jing'an district.

While the report does not mention which bar was raided, a few possibilities spring to mind as obvious candidates. Let's see... lots of foreigners, drugs, and (ignorant?) motivation to cherry pick that specific venue for a raid? I'm guessing the squad cars pulled away from Nanjing Lu… Continue

How long do I have to be nice?

Okay, it's been a year now. Today officially marks my anniversary date for starting my new job in Nanjing. Whoohoo! It's been a real ride, a lot of fun, and of course, a real challenge at times. It's part of my nature to want to and to also strive to do the right thing. I go the extra mile. I think that's pretty much a requirement for those of us who choose to make a life here.

I work in an office with over 400 employees; all Chinese. I'm the only Westerner in the entire office this… Continue

...But Mom, I don't want to go to bed!

So what to blog about that will interest people to return, entertain those reading, please Michael, and well prove that I am a writer...

Well, I left China now about 9 months ago and a lot in my life has changed since then. For those that know, I was in China teaching English, at a company I will not endorse even in a blog entry, and occasionally I was writing at Here! Dongguan, all of your guilty pleasure, I'm sure. I returned to the states, refusing jobs in HK, to be part of the… Continue

Did you just bump my leg?

I have been living and working in Nanjing, since moving here from the US (Florida) with my Chinese wife and daughter in late May of 2008. We have been renting an apartment in the Yuhuatai district, which enables me to walk to my office in about 15-20 minutes. At first, I was quite apprehensive to cross the streets, and work my way through the traffic, but as time goes by my confidence has improved. Still, it's the unexpected things that seem to happen, that I'm finding I must also prepare. In… Continue

Partying it up HK Style.

This past weekend was a pretty amazing weekend. A pretty awesome crew joined me, Britta, and Mike down in HK to celebrate our birthdays. It started out with a junk party out by Sai Kung. For those un-initiated in these terms... a junk party pretty much means we rent a big 65ft yacht, bring food and alcohol, bathing suits, and other miscellaneous items and just party for 8 hours to good music out off the coast of some HK beach. Sai Kung is off to the… Continue
