Expatacular

Hello. There is a possibility I'll be moving from the US to Shenyang in 2010. I've started doing research and reading. I'm open to advice. Best place to live as an expat? Cost of living? Expat community? Specifically, I would like to bring pets with me. I am curious if any of you have gone through that recently and what your recommendations would be. Thanks for the help.

Hi
I will also be living in Shenyang but allot of my time will be traveling to other cities
my fiance's family is there and she and i will have a home there and in 2 other cities in China
new friends are always welcome
i looked into bringing my small dog there
you can plan on paying about $2500 to $3000 typically from Atlanta to Beijing
the cheaper ways are not as safe for your pet
they don't do well on long non stop flights
so they schedule them on a longer trip but with more overnight stop overs to give them a change to rest and wind down along the way
I see your in Atlanta
small world
I am from Gainesville Ga. and in Augusta at the moment taking care of some personal things before returning to China
if you wish to know more let me know and we can contact each other
I have been going to Asian a few times a year for some time
I lived in Korea for 3 years
But most of my trips are to China and a few other countries
there are some nice folks here on this site and they are very helpful

I have lived near Shenyang for 4 years now and know the city quite well. The area has developed quickly over the last few years with hundreds of new housing schemes. Most of these have been in the west district (Tiexi) and south of the river new city area. Try to get an apartment as close to the city centre as you can to minimize your commute. Expect to pay between 800 to 1500 RMB a month for rent, depending on the size and quality of the house.

General cost of living in Shenyang much less than in Western countries. It's also allot less than big cities like Shanghai or Beijing. However, there are cheaper places. You will find life cheapest if you 'go Chinese' with your lifestyle. Eat Chinese food. If you stick to western foods your going to pay more. For example, one Big Mac, fries and Coke costs the same as two good quality beef noodle portions. Most western shops have sites in Shenyang. If you want, there are plenty KFC, McDonalds, Subway, Pizza Huts, Starbucks and more. So the city offers a balance of low price but still have western luxuries when you want them.

There are plenty expats living, working and studying in Shenyang. Just hang out at a Starbucks and your bound to see some other foreigners. You'll probably also meet some through your work.

This is good advice, and yes while Shenyang isn't as exciting and new as Beijing or Shanghai it can be a good place to live.

Hi Julie,
I too will be moving to Shenyang from the United States. My arrival will be May 1st of 2010, and I like you have been trying to do as much research as possible prior to making the move to China. I will spend the first year of my assignment in Shenyang then relocate to Chongqing in 2011.
You mentioned that you have been doing quite a bit of research so if you can direct me to any good websites that might help me get some more information it would be greatly appreciated. My wife will be staying in the United States, and I am trying to figure out the easiest way to get money to her while I am living in China. I don't know if it will be as easy as having my employer deposit my check into my U.S. bank account. She will be coming over to visit me after I have been in China for a couple of months.
If anyone has had a similar concern and knows if this a possiblility please reply to this post.....Thanks!!

Are you going to have a work permit, residence permit and pay local taxes?
If so, your employer will more than likely pay into a local bank account in yuan.
You can then change money from yuan to dollars once you prove you've paid tax.
You can then remit the dollars home to any bank of your choice.
The process is bureaucratic ( you need the right documents in the right format etc) and takes about 2 hours each time. I don't think it happens all that often and the bank staff don't want to make mistakes (for which they will be punished).
Can extend to a couple of days if they demand a document you don't currenty have.
After two successful transfers using a work contract denominated in dollars as one of the required documents, I got knocked back until I got a letter stating what I was being paid in yuan from my company.

If you don't have all the work permits etc, I will let others tell you how they handle it..

Peter,
Thanks for the reply and information as I have not been able to find to much on the internet regarding how to get money wired into my U.S. account.
My employer is a fairly new company, so I'm not even sure they have much experience in doing transactions of this nature. I will keep searching and watching on here for advice.....thanks again though for your reply.
