My family and I have the potential opportunity of moving to Guangzhou for a job in the foreseeable future. We are currently living in Dubai and have been for about three years. Can anyone give me an idea of what the expat community in Guangzhou is like? What is housing like, schooling. Also how much interaction do you have with the locals?

Thanks,
Peter Chamberlain

Peter,
if I have to compare DUbai to Guangzhou, I have to say it is nothing alike. I see Dubai always as a place where expats live and work rather isolated and the contact to locals is rather restricted, the infrastructure is one of the best developed in the world and you have a great school system for your kids. A few years ago, when I lived in the area, the formula was that every expat had to have at least 2 SUV and a house with a swimming pool in the package. Guangzhou is definitely different but in so many ways that I dont know where to start and where to end. There is a rather active expat live in Guangzhou, there is a good number of international schools around here. The chambers of commerce and expat social clubs are open and you will be quickly able to integrate though. So nothing to be too afraid of ... welcome in Guangzhou. PM me if you have more specific questions

As a freelancer interpreter based in Guangzhou ,I would like to introduce Guangzhou to you a little bit more .

Guangzhou has more than 30000 foreign residents and temporary foreign residents about 500000 persons .This number doesnot include the foreigners who just pay a visit to Guangzhou and could stay for several days .As you could see , there are really lots of expats living and working in Guangzhou . There are several places especially designed for foreigners ,such as Huaguoshan , mainly foreigners from Africa live there , Huangshidong Road , mainly European guys , Yuanjing Road , mainly Korean.etc. In this regard , we have lots of foreign bars and restaurants in town and you may go there to relax and meet local people . Most of the chinese people are very friendly and kind to foreigners .

Regarding of real estate , it is hard to see as it depends on location . Generally speaking , with RMB5000-10000/Month, you could have very good apartments in town for comfortable living . There are lots of real estate agents helping foreigner source apartments in town . Very convenient .

Not every body speaks english in town .But most of the young people could understand a little bit english . There are lots of english training schools in town such as Wallstreet english ,Crazy English .etc. There are also one English Version TV Channel on show and the most attractive programme is DISCOVER GUANGZHOU. Lots of locals and expats go there to understand and explore the beauty of this amasing city.

In a word , guangzhou good city deserving your exploration !

Hope above helps you something !
