the ecological enviroment of songshan lake is better than anywhere else in dongguan, but it's a new developing district, so it may be a little bust there. you may also need to consider about the transportation problem if you don't have a car.

hey everyone telling you its nice and clean? It's boring and far away from anything considered urban.

And while maybe not everyone is into urban, but don't think pagodas and such in songshan lake rural areas.

Plus in big open areas without the safety of crowds, can still get robbed. I think if you are teaching too, then stuck out there, the taxi cab cost of going the 30 minutes or so to civilization, that can be a real bear...

That's such a fantastic place, a good place for retirement, but quite out of town. And boreing place.

Thanks all for the advice.. sounds like the place is out in the sticks, may be too much of a change to move from Chicago to the Chinese countryside.... Any ideas on the cost of the cab ride? These schools do not pay squat, dont want to spend all of the money on cabs..

if the school pays like squat, then the taxis will stink and i doubt if pay stink, they will give you driver or transport, maybe just promise something or another but then you get here and screwed.

If the pay is squat, there are still lots of ESL jobs. And for someone from chicago, well....

And most people end up in dongguan, not purposely wanting to be here.... unlike guangzhou, shenzhen et cetera....

The taxi's should run between 30 and 50 RMB... I also came here from Chicago, but not for teaching. Dongguan is a pretty good place to live. We have been here a year now. Before that we lived in Pan Yu (Guangzhou). There are 3 pretty decent international schools here in Dongguan City. Plus many of the higher-end regular schools have an expat teacher or 2. If you find that the school you will be working at doesn't meet wiht your expectations, there are always other choices here. If those do not work out, both Guangzhou and Shenzhen have international English based schools.

The 3 main international schools here are QSI, Eaton House and Canadian International. I do know that the CI school is currently looking for American Teachers.
