HELP!!!! Need Dongguan China experience information.....

  • Rating: No Rating
Hello, I have recently been offered an expat assignment by my company to run our manufacturing operation in China. Our plant is in Dongguan with a sales office in Hong Kong. I would be living in Dongguan....
I have many question and will list a few but any experience, recommendations, or advise you could offer would be more than helpful.
1) What type of package do most companies offer for expats? This is new to my company and I would be the first and tasked with listing my demands so to speak.
2) Are their expat communities in Dongguan and where are they located or what are they called? I will be coming out there for 4-6 weeks starting the end of February and will need to look for places to live and find out if I can handle the CHina experience.
3)How bad is the food? I have heard some horror stories. Are there good places to eat for Americans.
4) Where are some must see or visit place when I am out there next month?

All help is greatly appreciated and will gladly be repaid by a beverage of your choice when I get to China.

Uncle Bob, you've been in China too long ! The Michigan guy ain't going to drive himself around Guangdong! Ben, see attached survey by a leading headhunter outfit on current manufacturing salaries. And make sure you have a driver for at least the first six months while you orient yourself !

You are so correct Mike; this guy should stay in his comfortable home.

When I read in his first questions
>>3)How bad is the food?
I cringed.

When I read in his second round of questions
>>Are there enough people who understand English to get by or is it extremely tedious.
extremely tedious!
I am embarrassed to be a fellow American.

Ben, the language here in Dongguan is Mandarin—Cantonese if you ask the locals. ;-)
By not speaking the language here YOU are the tedious one.
You should get your head around that fact that you are a guest here in China and an unofficial diplomat of the USA. If you come over here thinking you're at your fraternity house you will make all Westerners and American look bad.

It's not that difficult to live in China, DG is huge and the life style is much different in the town.
Don't worry about it, you will get used to it.
Food here is perfect depending on how much are you going to spend and the places you are going to.
Now I spend more times in Hu chi Ming City, I tell tell it's awful and I rather to stay at DG :-)
